111Edit

After her flashback to Jan. 1's magic trick, and subsequent discussion between her and Dreamer of the Magician card, Claire noticed that the first trump card had referred to the first day of the first month--111.

distilled's access to the MoA Ning was blocked at 1:11am BST on April 29 & was restored at 1:11pm BST.

8Edit

Reference to nice woman born 8/8/1988...Princess Beatrice of York, who recently became the first royal to complete the London Marathon.

Theory from Darkest_harness: "Claire's mask was the Vanessa butterfly with III on the Bridge of her nose. We all call Vanessa V and the III makes 8 in roman numerals."

Claire found in her research that "Henry [VIII] and his wife Catherine of Aragon stayed in the tower [of London] the night before the coronation."

Queen Katherine of Aragon stayed at Ampthill castle for three years while her divorce from King Henry VIII was under discussion at Dunstable Priory (1531-1533).

Darkest_harness also pointed out that "The Bell Tower [of the Tower of London] was used to imprison those that wouldn't change religion from Catholic to Henry VIII['s] Church of England."

The amulet that was hidden as part of the treasure hunt started by the book Masquerade has been missing since 1988 (as in it was auctioned off & no one has claimed to be its owner since that time).

The "stick" (wand) that Johan turned into a snake on Jan. 1, 2010 slithered into a figure 8 shape before turning into a stick again. This is probably meant to be the lemniscate that appears on the Magician card (see section below about this card).

24Edit

Aethalides Libatrix has added the song Variation 24 - Cécile Ousset etc to his Ning.

There are 24 hours in a day.

There are 24 Elder Futhark runes.

Ampthill and BedfordshireEdit

Ampthill is in Bedfordshire.

distilled discovered that in 1921, a Princess Beatrice came to Ampthill to unveil the The Cenotaph on the Alameda (source: http://www.galaxy.bedfordshire.gov.uk/webingres/bedfordshire/vlib/0.digitised_resources/ampthill_digitisation_timeline.htm). This is obviously not the same Princess Beatrice referred to in the section about 8s above, but is an interesting bit of consilience.

Jason, by way of signing off when he was very tired, said, "Now, to Bedfordshire.."

distilled commented on this, "my parents always used to say, when carrying me to bed as a child, 'up the wooden stairs to Bedfordshire'." It seems that "Up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire" is a "Nursery expression for going to bed, which refers to climbing the stairs. Possibly derived from a traditional nursery rhyme, entitled 'Up the wooden hill to Blanket Fair', it became a popular phrase in the 40s when Vera Lynn did a song version."

Claire: "isn't that where henry vIII and katherine of aragon lived before they got divorced in ampthill castle"

Katherine's cross is there -- a large cross stuck in the ground with a coat of arms on it and an inscription on the back. It is located on the original site of Ampthill castle. Amandel found this link about it: http://www.galaxy.bedfordshire.gov.uk/webingres/bedfordshire/vlib/0.digitised_resources/ampthill_lysons.htm

Claire had a flashback of Johan reading Masquerade, nodding & smiling and saying "that will work"; the amulet which was the prize for the treasure hunt started by Masquerade was buried in Ampthill near Katherine's Cross.

Argo Navis / Argonauts / the Argo / NavisEdit

From the Wikipedia article on Argo Navis:

Argo Navis (or simply Argo) was a large constellation in the southern sky that has since been divided into three separate constellations. It represented the Argo, the ship used by Jason and the Argonauts in Greek mythology. The abbreviation was "Arg" and the genitive was "Argūs Navis".
Argo Navis is the only one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy that is no longer officially recognised as a constellation. It was unwieldy due to its enormous size - were it still considered a single constellation, it would be the largest of all. In 1752, the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille subdivided it into Carina (the keel, or the hull, of the ship), Puppis (the poop deck), and Vela (the sails). When Argo Navis was split, its Bayer designations were also split. Carina has the α, β and ε, Vela has γ and δ, Puppis has ζ, and so on.
The constellation Pyxis (the mariner's compass) occupies an area which in antiquity was considered part of Argo's mast. However, Pyxis is not now considered part of Argo Navis, and its Bayer designations are separate from those of Carina, Puppis and Vela.

The logo of the Ministry of Argon is very similar to the crest of the municipality of Navis in Austria (see Wikipedia article. The only difference is that one section has been changed to a red colour from the original green, to have a connection to sinople (see below).

Catherine of Aragon has come up, and Aragon is very close to Argon/Argon.

Bletchley ParkEdit

The Enigma machine, which was involved with Ultra, is kept here. Alan Turing was involved with Bletchley Park as well.

Vladimir Sirin died here. Vanessa met JPW here. Claire was released here by JPW, and ran away because she saw that V was acting strangely/not herself.

ButterfliesEdit

Vanessa Atalanta is the name of a species of butterfly.

Claire's profile picture shows her wearing a mask she made that's been on her mind for some time now. She says she felt better while she was making it, but feels more confused now. It's a butterfly, but the middle is missing...the mask doesn't extend over her nose at all. We've figured out that Claire's mask is supposed to be a Painted Lady butterfly, easily seen at http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species.php?species=cardui . That website is inconsistent about the name...the webpage itself says it is a Cynthia cardui, but the title of the page in the web browser calls it a Vanessa cardui. Either one would be related to Vanessa Atalanta: Cynthia Phanes was the name of her grandmother, and Vanessa's mother's last name (or her grandmother's after marriage?) was Cardui. Claire has also pointed out the name for the west coast painted lady is Vanessa annabella; V's mother's name was Annabell Cardui.

In an episode of Fringe, a hallucinating character sees butterflies in a case flapping their wings (when they should be dead), then dies as he sees them flap all over him, cutting him with their razor-sharp wings.

Two of the Fringe glyphs involve a butterfly that appears to have the bones of one human hand running along each quadrant of its wings. (One of these glyphs is flashed before each commercial break, and the fan base has figured out that they correspond to one letter of the alphabet each and spell out one or more words each episode). The letters represented by these glyphs are O and P.

An article about Princess Beatrice running the London Marathon reports, "The 21-year-old princess and her American boyfriend David Clark were part of a 'human caterpillar' of 34 people who ran the length of the 26.2-mile course tied together with bungee cords."

In the forum thread Pictures, Ancaeus basically asked if we needed to have a butterfly picture as our avatar. Poeas' reply: "hehhehe - suckup - doing a buterfly pic - like who else huh huh??? *poke*" Atalanta's profile pic IS a butterfly.

Catherine/KatherineEdit

Claire found in her research that "Henry and his wife Catherine of Aragon stayed in the tower [of London] the night before the coronation."

Queen Katherine of Aragon stayed at Ampthill castle for three years while her divorce from King Henry VIII was under discussion at Dunstable Priory (1531-1533). There is now a monument known as Katherine's cross there to mark the former location of the castle (see section on Ampthill above).

The "Aragon" of Catherine of Aragon is, of course, very similar to Argo/Argon.

When Dreamer submitted her recruitment poster ideas, Jason said to her, "St Catherine and I thank you." Amandel discovered that St. Catherine of Bologna is the Patron Saint of artists.

The Feast of St. Catherine (of Siena) is April 29.

ClosureEdit

The caption that V has posted on her "Negative?" pic (the one of the parish church in Greenwich) in the "'LOL' " album reads, "No - just seeing the bright side of the closure..." An article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptanalysis_of_the_Enigma#British_bombe says that Alan Turing referred to some of the closed loops related to his decryption work as "closures". In his comment-reply to Talaus on the picture of part of the cover of Quest for the Golden Hare, Aethalides said, "We created a logical circle, one that is very delicate and one that we must strive to uphold." Would this "logical circle" be considered a closure...one which someone in the Ministry seeks to disrupt?

The FatesEdit

A message sent by Jason to Telos contained the hidden message

THEIRTHREADOFLIFEISSPUN
NOT HERE

Dawn connected this to the Fates. Says Wikipedia: "The Moirae or Moerae (in Greek Μοῖραι – the 'apportioners', often called The Fates), in Greek mythology, were the white-robed personifications of destiny," and descriptions can be found there of what the traditional 3 Fates each have to do with the spinning/measuring/cutting of each person's thread of life.

When Telos discovered the hidden message in his e-mail and brought it up to Jean, Jean said "Good, glad you like your Shakespeare." The three Fates correspond to the three witches in Macbeth, which came up in the previous game (and was especially related to Telos, since Vladimir told him to become the king of his chess board by any means necessary, which was also a Macbeth reference).

Ancaeus has posted pictures of three women to the "Photos from the party" album on the MoA Ning, saying, "Ladies that served us at the party - I know we weren't allowed to take pictures inside the building, but they didn't mind coming outside, under the night sky." The tags he used for the photos were "3" and "Ladies."

Golden FleeceEdit

The artist Kit Williams buried a golden hare-shaped amulet worth 5000 pounds in Ampthill near Katherine's cross, then wrote the book Masquerade to be clues to where the treasure was buried, so someone could find the amulet & keep it. Claire asks, "could it be the ministrys golden fleece?" The amulet was sold at an auction in 1988 (88!), and no one has claimed to have it since that time. Mr. Williams and many people worldwide have publicly asked that the current owner let the world know who has it, but no one has come forward. Mr. Williams doesn't think it's in England anymore.

GreenwichEdit

Vanessa and her Uncle Johan lived in Greenwich during the events of the previous chapter of this game.

Poeas' avatar on the Ning seems to depict the Prime Meridian, which passes through Greenwich and is associated with the Royal Observatory.

Since the Royal Observatory is in Greenwich, anything in that section of this page ties in with Greenwich as well.

KitEdit

The artist Kit Williams buried a golden hare-shaped amulet worth 5000 pounds in Ampthill near Katherine's cross, then wrote the book Masquerade to be clues to where the treasure was buried, so someone could find the amulet & keep it.

The picture associated with the Violet password is known as the Rotating Snakes illusion and was created by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, a professor of psychology in Japan.

MasqueradeEdit

(only items here not already mentioned elsewhere, for now)

distilled notes, "The way the Masquerade puzzle can be solved is, in the various paintings, to follow the eyeline of each animal, down the longest digit and this line will point to a specific letter. Perhaps we should employ this tactic? I'm not sure on what image though. The owl logo?"

Project Tiphys, and Frank Watson DysonEdit

In the leaked Ministry file about Vanessa, her reason for hiring was stated as "Assist with Project Tiphys."

When giving details of the party that was to be held on May 1, Aethalides said, "Could all Ministry members please confirm their attendance to me, recruits welcome to. Mos of the office are on task Tiphys, understanding, but for those able to come, please do."

In Greek mythology, Tiphys (Τίφυς), son of Hagnias (or of Phorbas and Hyrmina), was the helmsman of the Argonauts. He died of a mysterious illness. After his death, Ancaeus piloted the Argo. We do have a seemingly PM-run member on the MoA Ning named Ancaeus.

When we were finally able to open Target 628.doc, we discovered it to be about Project Tiphys. The target is Frank Watson Dyson, who died in 1939 while taking a boat from Australia to England.

Text in the document:

MINISTRY OF ARGON

SECURITY LEVEL: VIOLET

FOR CLEARED EMPLOYEE EYES ONLY
ANY EMPLOYEE FUND READING THIS WHO IS NOT OF CLEARED LEVEL WILL BE REMOVED

Agent: Tiphys

Date of death: 25 May 1939, on ship

Cause of death: Recurring ‘illness’
New cause of death: Poisoning with slow acting poison
[needs to be administered by 23rd May to create ‘illness’ and removal of agent]

Reason for change: Ensure memorial for communication at RVZ8, prevent Rg111 developments with A.E., safeguard overseas interests
Potential paradox problem if communication RVZ8 removed
Current future indicates that interception likely and Ultra change could incur heavy loss of life

Relative concerns: Henriette Le Rennet, currently employed within Ministry

Agents in field: Atalanta 1 [CP]

Method: Agent to be contacted prior to event with machine. Vanessa Atalanta to be ‘hired’ and persuaded to communicate with Atalanta 1 [CP]

Safety: Use relative to influence Tiphys to end own life

Other concerns: Nestor ‘network’. Hire them to convince of actuality requirements. Emotional play best. Logic if not. Threaten with loss of life last resort

According to Wikipedia, Dyson was Astronomer Royal for Scotland from 1905 to 1910, and Astronomer Royal (and director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory) from 1910 to 1933. He introduced a new free-pendulum clock to the Observatory, and this wireless transmission made Greenwich Mean Time more accurate. He also invented the "six pips" (a series of six short tones broadcast at one-second intervals by many BBC Radio stations to mark the precise start of each hour). This is probably why six beeps were emitted from degravedi's computer right before its PM-forced shutdown.

A.E. could potentially refer to Albert Einstein. Some of Dyson's work supported some of Einstein's, such as his theory of relativity & theory of the effect of gravity on light.

Henriette Le Rennet is Poeas.

Atalanta 1 [CP] could refer to Cynthia Phanes - Vanessa's grandmother. She would have been 15 years old in May 1939.

The "Nestor network" is connected to Vladimir Sirin, who we are told sacrificed himself for the good of national security at the close of the last game. The network is probably those of us who support his ideas and would stand against the Ministry.

What memorial is being referred to? What is meant by RVZ8 and the communication to happen there? What Rg111 developments with A.E. are to be avoided? What overseas interests are being protected? Interception likely by whom? Is the "Ultra change" meant to refer to the British intelligence that intercepted and decoded German radio communications during WWII? Is it connected to the Coventry Blitz that came up a lot during the last game? What is the "potential paradox problem"?

Dyson's obituary may be read at http://adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1939Obs....62..179S . He had two sons and six daughters.

Dyson's memorial service was held June 1, 1939 at Greenwich Parish Church.

See Timeline entries for May 8 and 9 for the kickoff of our part in Project Tiphys.

More info from Aethalides re the "potential flux":

eery action has a consequence - the more we limit this the better.
Each time a name is written, electronically sent or focussed upon, it can take upon power. Tiphys was one of the founders, in essence, of the Ministry and while we honour him as such, he does need to die. If he were to continue alive - well - shudder...
The future Ministry has warned us that in our time, this year, that someone will try and prevent his death. We therefore need to ensure it happens. Who knows, as time as it is, perhaps it was always thus?
Not killing grandfather paradox or such, but just an awareness that everytime we refer to him, we need to be careful as the future may be reading what we write as well as the past receiving its ripples...

RavensEdit

Claire, about hearing about Poeas: "you know the first thing i thought when he said that name was edgar allen poe and he wrote the raven, which are the famous birds of the tower of london"

Darkest_harness also noted that the Tower of London has some very famous ravens.

Of the ravens, Wikipedia says, "It was said that Charles II ordered their [i.e., the ravens'] removal following complaints from John Flamsteed, the Royal Astronomer. However, they were not removed because Charles was then told of the legend that if the ravens ever leave the Tower of London, the White Tower, the monarchy, and the entire kingdom would fall (the London Stone has a similar legend). Charles, following the time of the English Civil War, superstition or not, was not prepared to take the chance, and instead had the observatory moved to Greenwich."

The Royal Observatory and Royal AstronomersEdit

The observatory is connected to some of Johan's papers.

In a message to Sirannon, Poeas said, "Welcome to the Ministry, started by the Royal Astronomers and finishing with them too [if I have my way]."

Poeas' avatar on the Ning seems to depict the Prime Meridian, which passes through Greenwich and is associated with the Royal Observatory.

Dawn discovered that there is a position within the royal household called "Astronomer Royal". It's somewhat of an honorary title, with the person advising the monarch of scientific and astronomical issues.

There is also a connection to the ravens in the Tower of London. Wikipedia says, "It was said that Charles II ordered their [i.e., the ravens'] removal following complaints from John Flamsteed, the Royal Astronomer.

Link to do with the Astronomer Royal, including a list of people who have had & hold the post: http://www.royal.gov.uk/TheRoyalHousehold/OfficialRoyalposts/AstronomerRoyal.aspx

Frank Watson Dyson, the man targeted by Project Tiphys, was a Royal Astronomer.

Sinople/red and greenEdit

In the previous chapter of the game, there were many references to the word sinople, which refers to a red colour in some contexts and a green colour in other contexts. Since red and green are complementary (opposite) colours, this gives the word a kind of duality.

In the Ministry's new logo, there is a red section and a green section that mirror each other.

In Claire's dream, red and green lights are shown to the woman she sees at the beginning of the dream, flashing the pattern green, green, green, red. This same sequence is shown to Claire later in her dream, when she is reliving her kidnapping, while a female voice from an unseen woman tells her to forget. There is an episode of Fringe in which lights flashing in this pattern are used to control people: see this link and this one.

Discussion with Claire has also raised the idea of the red and green symbolizing two parallel realities--one in which you make one choice from a decision you have to make, and another reality in which you make the other choice. She wonders if somehow she has two sets of memories because she is "remembering" things from both realities.

Snakes and the OuroborosEdit

The picture associated with the Violet password is known as the Rotating Snakes illusion and was created by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, a professor of psychology in Japan. Lots of info on it at http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/mot_rotsnake/index.html and http://www.ritsumei.ac.jp/~akitaoka/rotsnakee.html . It works due to something called peripheral drift.

A snake eating its own tail is known as an ouroboros (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouroboros). The magician on card 1 of the Tarot has an ouroboros for a belt.

The "stick" (wand) that Johan turned into a snake on Jan. 1, 2010 slithered into a figure 8 shape before turning into a stick again. This is probably meant to be the lemniscate that appears on the Magician card rather than the belt he wears (see section below about this card).

The Tower of LondonEdit

Aethalides Libatrix has added the song Westminster Bridge by Murray Gold to his Ning.

From Darkest_harness:

The tower of london has a bell tower that has some very famous ravens. It also has the royal connection. Went onto aa route finder and plotted the route from the London Eye to the Tower of London:
Start out on Westminster Bridge Road
Westminster Bridge
At "Big Ben" traffic signals turn right onto the A3211
At traffic signals turn right onto the A302
Westminster Bridge
At traffic signals continue forward onto the A302
Turn right onto the A23 Signposted Elephant and Castle, Camberwell Green
At Lambeth North Underground Station continue forward onto the A23 Signposted Elephant and Castle
Continue forward onto the A3202
At Saint George's Circus roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A3202 Signposted London Bridge
At traffic signals turn left onto the A3Signposted The City, London Bridge
At Borough Junction, traffic signals turn right onto the A2 Signposted New Cross
Turn left onto the A2198 Signposted Tower Bridge
At traffic signals turn left onto the A100
At traffic signals continue forward onto the A100Signposted Ring Road, The City
At traffic signals continue forward to cross
Tower Bridge
Arrive at Tower Bridge approach
That route has the St George reference, Cross reference, Westminster Bridge and of course the Tower. Also the Marathon had to be rerouted as it used to pass the Tower of London as the cobble street outside was considered dangerous.
Edit: also Big Ben is a huge clock which could tie in with the clock in Claire's dream?
Edit: Also this may be a shot in the dark but the building of the bell tower began during the reign of Richard the Lionheart. The Bell Tower was used to imprison those that wouldn't change religion from Catholic to Henry VIII['s] Church of England.

From Claire's research:

  • "before the reformation it was used as the place to stay before a coronation. Henry and his wife Catherine of Aragon stayed in the tower the night before the coronation."
  • "Then of course Henry requested an anullment from the pope and was denied and so set up his own religion and anyone who wouldn't deny the pope and swear allegiance to the sovereign was imprisoned in the tower of london."
  • i.e., "during Henry VIII's reign it was used as a prison."
  • She connected this to Jason's quest for the golden fleece: "I seem to remember that Jason was travelling to find the golden fleece (someone told me about the argon argonauts connection) so that he could take control of his uncle's kingdom. I think although i'm not that hot on the classics. Just trying to think of towers and the number 8 lol."

Later, Claire and her friend rediscovered that "it was custom for the sovereign to stay in the tower the night before their coronation. Not that i think i'm a queen lol but if i was in the bell tower maybe someone was in the tower?"

William(s)Edit

The artist Kit Williams buried a golden hare-shaped amulet worth 5000 pounds in Ampthill near Katherine's cross, then wrote the book Masquerade to be clues to where the treasure was buried, so someone could find the amulet & keep it.

A picture (now removed) posted by Aethalides to the Ministry of Argon Ning (under the title "Party photo") was an illustration from Poe's short story William Wilson. The missing letters from the caption spelled out "william".

Tarot trump cardsEdit

Card 0Edit

The Fool

Claire read, "it sometimes means stepping into the abyss, the jaws of the crocodile and he's in search of experience", and asked, "is there any risk or search of experience with the ministry stuff?"

Card 1Edit

The Magician

Claire had a flashback to New Year's Day, when Johan did his magic trick of turning a "stick" into a snake. She saw the snake make a figure 8 before turning back into a stick again. Dreamer mentioned to her that a figure 8 could also be the symbol for infinity, and that it's called a lemniscate, and that Vladimir used to bring them up. Dreamer showed her the image of the Magician trump card, including the infinity symbol above his head. They noticed that this bit about the card applies to Claire's decision to start taking charge & not be so passive: "Depending on the card's placement in relation to other cards, the message is to tap into one's full potential rather than holding back, especially when there is a need to transform something."

While looking at & reading the card, Dreamer noticed that "About his waist is a serpent-cincture or girdle, the ouroboros, the serpent devouring its own tail. The ouroboros is an ancient symbol of eternity..." This symbol came up in the previous game more than once, and the image sent to active members to remind them of the Violet password was of the Rotating Snakes illusion. Perhaps the Violet password is OUROBOROS, if the MoA hasn't changed it.

Claire asked what the Magician is holding; it is a wand. She suggested that maybe the "stick" Johan held when doing his magic trick was a wand. Wikipedia says, "In the Magician's right hand is a wand raised towards heaven, the sky or the element æther, while his left hand is pointing to the earth. This iconographic gesture has multiple meanings, but is endemic to the Mysteries, symbolizing divine immanence, the ability of the magician to bridge the gap between heaven and earth."

Card 2Edit

The High Priestess

Card 3Edit

The Empress

Claire mentioned the idea of the Empress representing new business. From Wikipedia: "The Empress is mother, a creator and nurturer. In many decks she can be shown as pregnant. She can represent the creation of life, of romance, of art or business. The Empress can represent the germination of an idea before it is ready to be fully born."

Dreamer thinks Claire also mentioned the Empress being associated with a new beginning.

Card 20Edit

Judgment

Posted by Vanessa in her "'LOL' :)" album on May 1, her caption is "Does what it says on the tin."

Note that on April 28, Poeas posted a link to a YouTube video of Crystalised by xx. Connection?

RunesEdit

In a blog on April 29, Vanessa asked us for ideas for what to get JPW for his birthday, saying, "Don't want to rune his birthday by getting somethting not suitable" [emphasis added].

There are 24 Elder Futhark runes.

An article claiming that some see connection between these runes and the Tarot can be read at http://www.sunnyway.com/runes/tarot.html .

Rune 1: FEHU, FEdit

Represents domestic cattle or wealth.

On April 30, Vanessa tweeted, "Father Especially Horrible, Understandable re security but *still* haven't got him a present - been really hard to think of something..." The capital letters spell out FEHU, which is the first rune of the Elder Futhark set.

Some feel that the FEHU rune corresponds to the Tower card in the Tarot.

Rune 2: URUZ, UEdit

Represents Auroch, a wild ox.

On May 1, Vanessa's blog included the statement, "URUZ only old as you feelz!"

Thought to correspond to the High Priestess card.

Rune 3: THURISAZ, THEdit

Represents a thorn or a giant.

Thought to correspond to the Emperor card.

On May 2, Vanessa posts a new blog entry, basically saying she's given everyone the day off to grieve but that everyone is expected back in the office on Monday. She refers to herself as a purge, a cleansing fire, and as having removed the thorn from the side of the Ministry. This imagery is all consistent with the third rune.

V's tweet today was from Numbers 33:55, which also mentions people being thorns in other people's sides.

Rune 4: ANSUZ, AEdit

Represents the As, ancestral god, i.e., Odin.

Thought to correspond to the Death card.

Rune 5: RAIDHO, REdit

Represents a wagon or chariot.

Thought to correspond to the Hierophant card.

Rune 6: KENAZ, KEdit

Represents a beacon or torch.

Thought to correspond to the Chariot card.

Rune 7: GEBO, GEdit

Represents a gift.

Thought to correspond to the Lovers card.

Rune 8: WUNJO, W or VEdit

Represents joy.

Thought to correspond to the Strength card.
